Thank you all for your help so far! I'm getting closer to some conclusions thanks to you!
The speed of my internet connection has been brought up a couple times, I have a T1 connection and plenty of bandwidth.
I've quoted a few replies and have questions for some of you who have helped a lot already.
Please bear with me as I ask some questions:
For remote access, how will remote users be authenticated ? what bandwidth will they have available at their end and at the server end ? how many concurrent users will there be ? what availability do you need for remote access
For web browser access I would probably go for the Barracuda SSL VPN device.
1. I was thinking that I could set up FTP access to the data because the max concurrent users would be around 10.
2. If this is not possible what advantages does the Barracuda device provide?
You could get some sort of rack-mounted array that can support 48+ drives (assuming a bunch of 1TB drives in the array, although you could go with 2TB drives as well). You can link several smaller cases together and connect them to a Mac Pro with additional hardware that supports RAID. That assumes you want to go the Mac route for the software side. With Lion merging the serve OS that could make things a lot easier.
How many users are you planning on supporting? Are you planning on doing more than just hosting video files? Email? Calendar? Web services? (what sort of Internet connection you have plays in here as well). If it's just a couple users, your server probably doesn't need to be a high end Mac Pro. Still, look at what you are buying. This could easily be a $25,000 plus project. And don't forget the whole backup strategy which can be expensive in terms of equipment and more expensive in terms of disciplined time investment.
1. I'm wondering what type of rack-mounted array you recommend assuming I get a Mac Pro.
2. I'm looking at about ten users max, usually only a few. How much RAM do you recommend equipping the Mac Pro with assuming I get at least a quad-core.
http://www.activestorage.com/activeraid.php#tab5
fill it with 2tb drives and get a mac mini server or a mac pro server or eqv for remote (with a fat pipe if you don't have one already)
or use this (32tb option) for the storage either one of these or the active raid will do fine

These look great, but I'm thinking I might be able to build something to meet my needs for less money. I have the skills to put a server together and set it up, this is just my first time creating a rig from the ground up. Thoughts?

I still can't play the video. This is pissing me off. Are that many people still watching this thing?
Well, you sure are trying to so I would guess others are. I would guess many people are rewinding parts, reviewing parts, and some like tried to wait until most had viewed it like you- It is good that so many people are trying to watch this thing- but isn't good apple can't keep up with demand on their servers/bandwidth I finally got to watch it yesterday and actually had to keep rewinding parts as I missed things when my kids woudl come up to me and chat about something.

Hmm...I'm so glad I waited! Looks like I'll be saving up for one! Now I'll have all three consoles! WOOT! :D
But really, which would you go with: PS3 with Blu-ray and any kind of hard drive, or a 360 with proprietary hard drive? Personally, I'd go with a PS3.
Can you actually switch the internal PS3 harddrive without voiding your warranty?
Personally I like the attachment-style interface for the 360 HDD better (simpler solution).

I'm not a fan of 3D movies (too gimicky) but they are different technologies with different results. With this app, cool as it is, you have to move in relation to the display to get any sort of depth. As far as I can tell, this would not work for any movies/games where the camera is moving. That, and there appears to be no "z axis" depth unless you're swinging your head back and forth.
As cheesy as it is in movies, at least you can sit still in your seat and have the paddleball fly into your face. This demo appears to be more like, "you can see the paddleball string if you tilt your head to the side".
True, if you hold your head perfectly still you won't get the 3D effect. But you never hold your head perfectly still (without conscious effort), and you hands will always be moving small amounts as well, so your head will almost always be moving relative to the face-tracking camera.
Now try going to a movie theater, and watching a 3D movie with your head held at any sort of significant angle off the vertical, say resting on the shoulder of your S.O.. It doesn't work at all then either. (You can get around that by using active [shutter] glasses, but then you're adding weight, expense, and battery life as concerns.)

Why don't you atheists and non-Christian followers grow a pair already? You want us to respect the fact that you walk the Earth, too, and don't share our religious beliefs, so how about you do the same, ok?
Isn't it funny how Christians consistently seem to think respecting 'the fact that you walk the Earth, too' means forcing retailers to celebrate their holiday? Meanwhile, Kwanzaa is respectfully declared to be 'made-up' while the birth and resurrection of Jesus are declared indisputable historical facts.
Quite a few of the founding fathers were not Christian, by the way. Notably Thomas Jefferson.
Sorry to divert the thread, but the little baby's Christian rant caught my eye.

On an object handled this much, carbon fiber will start to fray. Plus they'd have to paint it because it's not very stylish.
I'd be on board with a black metal MBP. The old 'black books' were a huge hit, weren't they?

Has anyone installed a Copy of Leopard on there Computer and how do you like it so far also how stable is it
Where computer?
The only copies of Leopard available are Developer Preview (pre-Beta). They are available only to the top two levels of the Apple Developer Connection and are covered by very strict Non-Disclosure Agreements.
As a preview release I would imagine Leopard to be currently very unstable.

I noticed that Other World Computing has posted their free Macworld Exhibition Hall pass (http://eshop.macsales.com/Macworld/) and was wondering who was planning to go to the show this year. I've used OWC's free pass every year for the past three years and have never had any problems. It's a great way to check out all your favorite developers and vendors.
So who else will be there, and who's traveling the farthest?
EDIT: We've put together a plan so that we can all get a chance to meet each other during MacWorld. Every day of the expo, there'll be an informal meet-up of MacRumors members at 3:00pm in the "Horseshoe Lounge" area of the South Hall's street-level lobby. Photos and diagram here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3208175&postcount=64). No RSVP is required, and you're welcome to stop by just one day, or every day.
The Big Meet-Up
We're designating the first day of the Expo, Tuesday, Jan. 9th, as the BIG MEET-UP. It seems like most people are planning to be there that day, so it's the best chance to meet other MacRumors members. If you can only make it to one, this should be it. 3:00 at the horseshoe lounge location (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3208175&postcount=64).
Here's the list (so far) of MR members who have said they will be at Macworld:
1. Flowbee
2. vniow
3. devilot (maybe)
4. cuestakid
5. CHROMEDOME
6. screensaver400
7. WildCowboy

15. arn

Hope to see you there.

I definitely agree about the UI inconsistencies throughout Mac OS X. It's getting pretty ridiculous actually. With all the apps looking different, it is SO completely un-mac-like. I understand the need to differentiate the consumer vs pro apps (ical vs final cut pro), but none of the consumer apps match each other, and then the Finder contradicts them all.
The problem just seems to be getting worse. Is it really that hard for Apple to just follow their own HIG?

We all know about the enforcement side of the burka, but we have yet to dissect the reason for same, as considered by the founders of the religion.
I have a few.
1) Stops 'grass is greener' by your neighbour
2) Stops laughing at his 'Cracker Jack' surprise.
3) Makes sure that no womb goes unused, in the service of Allah.
Any others come to mind?
I will let the women at MR discuss this from the female side.

So are these guys getting a fair trial? Are they exempt from cruel and unusual punishment? Oh, that's right, that little lack of human rights thing...
I really think Apple should step up and make sure these guys aren't treated unfairly or overly harshly, even *if* they leaked the design. Frankly, that would be the *only* course of action for a civilized company like Apple to do.
I don't think that will happen in the near future... It's a foreign country and Apple really dislikes that their products get leaked... They still haven't forgiven gizmodo for the iP4 leak...

From my experience with CF it is a very strong and light-weight material but I doubt it would be a good idea to replace something like the glass backside of the iphone with carbon fiber as it is prone to damage when pressure is applied to a very limited area (think of iphone + keys in your pocket)
For example cf-bikes are great until you have anything but a minor crash...the even the smallest crack can be devestating to the structural integrity...
You're comparing a bike hitting a rock at 25 mph while carrying a 200 lb man with a cell phone in your pocket?
Whatever you are doing that would damage CF in your pocket with keys is going to rip the flesh off your leg.
